University communications often combine public information, institutional reputation and recruitment. Journalism should preserve the useful information while making the basis of each claim clear.
Name the responsible unit
A faculty, laboratory, centre or named research group is more informative than a vague reference to “our university”.
Link to evidence
The original paper, grant announcement, official appointment or partnership document should be identifiable.
Explain the scale
A pilot project, local award and international programme should not be described as if they were equivalent.
Avoid recognition ambiguity
Accreditation, approval, membership, indexing and partnership are different concepts and should be named accurately.
